Porter’s No-No, Struhs’ 1-Hitter Highlight Chargers’ 3-Win Weekend

Jackson Porter (LaHarpe, Ill./Illini West) threw a no-hitter and Nolan Struhs followed with a one-hitter to complete a sweep Saturday against Kishwaukee as the Carl Sandburg College baseball won three out of four games this weekend.

Key Moments

  • After hitting the Kougars’ leadoff batter, Porter retired the next 15 in a row for a five-inning no-hitter.
  • Leading 4-0 entering the fifth, the Chargers plated six runs to end the game via the mercy rule and ensure Porter’s no-no. Cacey O’Brien (Moline, Ill./Moline) delivered the knockout blow with a two-run single.

Sandburg Standout
Kishwaukee had virtually no chance against Porter, who struck out eight, didn’t issue a walk and threw 46 of his 57 pitches for strikes. He had first-pitch strikes against 13 of 16 batters and improved to 5-0 while lowering his ERA to 2.90.

Key Moments

  • Struhs retired the first nine batters he faced before allowing a leadoff single in the fourth to spoil his bid to match Porter’s no-hitter. It was the only baserunner he allowed on the day.
  • The Chargers scored in every inning, with Tyler Womack (Moline, Ill./Moline) breaking the ice with a two-run triple to right in the first.
  • Braedon Blackford (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) connected for a three-run home run to right in the second inning for a 5-0 lead. It marked Blackford’s team-leading sixth homer of the season and his fifth in five games.

Sandburg Standout
Struhs shut down the Kougars, striking out 11 and not issuing a walk. He threw 48 of his 74 pitches for strikes. In his last three outings (16 innings), the lefty has struck out 34 and allowed just three runs on eight hits and five walks.

  • Back-to-back homers in the seventh got the Wolfpack within a run, but Kyler Edelman (Gridley, Ill./El Paso-Gridley) retired the next two batters to closed out the victory.

Sandburg Standout
Womack finished 2 for 5 and collected six RBIs on the day. In addition to his slam, he had a two-run single in the second that got Sandburg within 5-4.

Blackford was the only Charger to collect multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

UP NEXT
The Chargers (11-8-1, 4-0 Arrowhead Conference) will go for a series sweep against Kishwaukee as they travel to face the Kougars at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
